What: Plaza Midwood’s Annual Winter Fling and Silent Action

This year’s event is an old-fashioned pig pickin’, courtesy of PMNA, Legion Brewing and Roots Catering.

How much: Presale tickets will be $30 and will include dinner with lots of pork, corn on the cob, vegetarian baked beans and smoked vegetables. We’ll also have a delicious vegetarian entree for those interested. All food is prepared by the excellent chefs at Roots.

In addition, there’ll be beer from Legion. Your ticket includes your first beer, and the fine brewers at Legion will make sure there’s plenty of great beer on tap for a night of fun. (Beer, wine, soft drinks and coffee will be available throughout the evening.)

We’ll have a band and DJ, too, plus raffles and other activities.

And, of course, we’ll have a host of terrific items up for bid at our annual silent auction. The auction is one of PMNA’s most important revenue sources, and the funds we generate from this help to support our local schools, community beautification and great events like our summer “Movies in the Park” series.

A reminder: We’ll be selling a limited amount of tickets this year, so don’t wait until the last minute to get yours!

Where: The party will be at Legion Brewing on Commonwealth Ave. We’ll have access to the loft, the brewing area and tented parking lot with plenty of space for you and all your friends.

When: Saturday, March 4 starting at 6 pm.

What else: We’re still ironing out plenty of details, so check back often for more. Our hope is to ensure it’s a fun, easy and food-filled night for everyone.

Winter Fling 2017 FAQ

Q. I haven’t received my tickets yet. How do I get them?

A. If you’ve pre-ordered tickets, your name will be on a list at the entrance to Winter Fling. You’ll be checked in, given your beer tickets and be all set to start partying.

Q. I don’t have tickets yet. Can I still get them?

A. Sure can. They’re available in person at Legion or online here:

Advance purchase tickets are $30 and come with one free beer coupon, courtesy of Legion. At-the-door tickets will be available, too, as supplies last. We will cap ticket sales at a certain point, and day-of tickets are $35.

Q. The event has moved to Legion. Is there really enough space for everyone?

A. Yes! You’re free to explore the tap room, which will be open to the general public. Winter Fling events will be held in the parking lot, which will be tented with heaters, the mezzanine and the brew house.

Q. What about the silent auction? Is that still happening?

A. Absolutely! The silent auction is where PMNA raises all its money from the event. This year, proceeds are going to neighborhood beautification projects, including installing dog waste stations throughout the area.

Q. So how do we bid on the auction items?

A. All items will be displayed in the Legion brewhouse, but you can start bidding on items this week using Bidding Owl. All bids will be done electronically this year, so simply click over to to peruse our great packages up for auction and place your bids. You can start bidding now, and if you run into trouble the day of the event, our friendly PMNA volunteers will be there to help. You may have to hold their beers though.

Q. Why change from the paper format? Isn’t technology going to rise up and enslave us all?

A. We’ve seen “Terminator” also, but we think this is safe. The online bidding process allows you to see more details on the items, get alerts if you are out-bid on an item you like, place bids on items without leaving the dance floor and pay for your winning bids online. And, to further ease your fears, we assure you that your transaction data is not stored anywhere for third parties.

Q. What time should I arrive?

A. The event starts at 6 p.m., with the taps flowing and music from Mike Kelleher to keep you dancing. Dinner service begins at 6:30, and New Local takes the stage at 7. Our silent auction will wrap up around 9:30.

Q. What’s for dinner?

A. After years of oyster roasts for Winter Fling, we wanted to switch things up a bit this year. ROOTS Catering will be handling dinner, including a whole hog roast (complete with sauces), vegetarian baked beans, corn on the cob and smoked veggies. For vegetarians, we’ll also have grilled portabella mushrooms that we promise will be exceptional.

Q. What about dessert?

A. We don’t want you running out of energy, so we’ll have late night coffee from Undercurrent Coffee, soon to be open on Commonwealth Ave. We’ll also have ice cream from Two Scoops Creamery.

Q. What about our drink options?

A. We’ll have numerous beer and wine stations set up outside with a nice assortment of Legion brews. You’re also welcome into the Legion tap room for their full line of beers.

Q. So no liquor?

A. Unfortunately, due to liquor laws, Legion is unable to serve spirits. But we’ll have some great items up for bid in the silent auction, including gift cards to plenty of places that make a tasty Old Fashioned.

Q. What should I wear?

A. It’s a casual event, but we’ll buy you a drink if you show up in a tuxedo (or two drinks if you wear a tuxedo t-shirt). Also keep in mind that some of the festivities are outdoors. While we’ll have heaters set up, it’s still a good idea to bring a jacket.

Q. What’s the parking situation?

A. It’s limited, so if you can walk, bike or take a cab/Uber/Lyft, that’s ideal. We will have off-site parking available at City Church (2300 McClintock Rd) with golf carts running attendees back and forth to Legion, courtesy of our friends at Village of Commonwealth.

Q. I plan to look great. Will there be a photographer?

A. Yup. Our pal Tod Carleson will be stopping by to snap pictures, but we’d love to see your photos, too. We’re on Instagram at and Facebook at Please tag us in your pictures and we’ll select the best ones for a prize after the event.

Q. Do I need to bring cash?

A. It may help speed up your purchases, but we’ll have credit card machines for all transactions, too.

Q. How about drinks?

A. Beer and wine will be purchased using drink tickets, which will be available at the check-in desk. They can be used at any of the stations in the Fling area and in the Legion tap room.

Q. I have some friends from outside the neighborhood who want to come. Is that OK?

A. Absolutely. We like showing off how great Plaza Midwood is to folks who aren’t lucky enough to live here.

Q. I’m eating dinner elsewhere, but I’d still like to come by. Do I have to pay full price?

A. If tickets remain the day of the event, we’ll have a non-dining option available at a discounted rate.

Q. This all sounds too good to be true.

A. That’s not a question, but we agree. It’s going to be a blast, and we can’t wait to see you all there.
