Midwood Maynia is Plaza Midwood’s official event to welcome warmer weather, the blossoms of spring and the beginning of the outdoor festival season. Who wouldn’t want to celebrate spring in our neighborhood with the great weather, music, food, beer from Legion Brewing, a parade and a tour of some of Midwood’s wonderful homes?
Please join friends, family, neighbors, artisans and many of our local businesses in beautiful Midwood Park for the annual Midwood Maynia festival. Always held on the first full weekend in May, the 2018 festivities will take place on Saturday, May 5th with our much celebrated candlelight Home Tour kicking-off the event on the evening of Friday, May 4th. Mark your calendars now and follow us on social media to hear about the latest updates!
You can purchase your tickets for the Home Tour below, but if you’re willing to help out by volunteering at one of our amazing homes for just a couple of hours, your ticket (along with a t-shirt) will be free. This is a huge event and requires lots of man (and woman) power, so please volunteer if possible. It’s a great way to meet neighbors and see the homes.

CANDLELIGHT TOUR – FRIDAY, MAY 4
On Friday, May 4 we continue the tradition of the Candlelight Home and Garden Tour from 6 – 8 pm. The Candlelight tour is a great opportunity to meet some of the homeowners as well! To get a FREE ticket, please sign up for a home tour volunteer slot (see the sign-up sheet above).
MAYNIA DAY EVENTS – SATURDAY, MAY 5
MIDWOOD MILES 5K: Due to a lack of available CMPD officers because of the Cinco De Mayo festivities around Charlotte, our regular Midwood Miles 5K has had to take a one-year hiatus. In its place, we’re planning a “fun run” around the neighborhood. This will be an informal run with no entry fee, registration, timers or prizes — but we will have a few helpers to get folks headed in the right direction at the start. We’ll meet for the group run at 8:30am at Midwood Park.
For questions, please contact Midwood Miles Race Director: Chris Folk, 704.634.9081.
COMMUNITY WORKOUT: Not a runner, but want to burn some calories before the party in the park? Join Camp Gladiator for a free community workout at 9:30am. Bring your own mat and a water bottle. Camp Gladiator is an outdoor adult boot camp with a focus on challenging, fun and community building workouts. They run morning and evening workouts every week in at Midwood Park.
PET PARADE: We love our pets in PM. At 10 am, join neighbors for everyone’s favorite event, the Midwood Maynia Pet Parade. All canines, felines and other pets – and their humans – are eligible participants. Parade participants should gather outside The Vine Church (in the front of the sanctuary) at 9:30 am. After a Blessing of the Pets, pets & their humans will be led through the streets of Midwood. Please note this year’s parade route is a much-shortened version than we have had in the past due to limited CMPD resources – but the fun is never diminished!
This is a don’t-miss event full of great photo opportunities. If you don’t participate but are on the route you can still take part by providing water bowls, treats and cheers of encouragement. There is no registration fee for the Pet Parade. The parade route is also featured in this issue of The Spirit. And please remember to clean up after your pet! While we do love our pets in Plaza Midwood, please be considerate with your pets once the food and music starts and refrain from having them at the amphitheater, as there will be food, kids, and other distractions.
Pet Parade Coordinator: Alison Rogers, 917.589.7891
PLANT SWAP: Bring some, trade some… Talk about your green thumb as part of the Midwood Community Garden at 11:30.
HOME AND GARDEN TOUR: The always-anticipated Home and Garden Tour continues on Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm (an extra hour this year!). You’ll enjoy seeing inside some of the neighborhood’s most impressive homes and gardens to get tips, tricks and decorating ideas for your own home. Plus, they’ll even be some treats along the way provided by our local sponsors.
Home and Garden Tour tickets can be purchased online now (see above) and will be available at Slate Interiors, Moxie Mercantile, and Common Market starting April 21st for the advanced ticket price of $20. On the days of the event, tickets can be purchased for $25 in front of The Vine Church on Belvedere Ave. To get a FREE ticket, please sign up for a home tour volunteer slot! (see above).

KIDSWOOD: If you’re a kid or a kid at heart, head back over to Midwood Park for Kidswood, a celebration with activities for our youngest residents from 11am – 2pm. Our local organizations will present a variety of kid-oriented fun. Activities may include fun projects such as sand art, painting, bird house construction, dancing and bubbles galore! In between art projects, the little ones can blow off some steam in the much-loved Bounce House. See you at Kidswood!
Kidswood Director: tbd
PARTY IN THE PARK: From noon until 7 p.m., join all the other Mayniacs in Midwood Park for food, great beer from Legion Brewing, and a variety of activities including great live local music, friends, family, and of course – sun, lots of sun! Remember, please drink responsibly. (But then, you can always walk home after all.)
VENDORS IN THE PARK: Enjoy learning about community initiatives, buy art from neighborhood artists and look for other fun stuff in the Park during Maynia. Interested in getting your own vendor table for the festivities? Contact Randy Podosek at firstname.lastname@example.org for details or to make a reservation.
MUSIC LINEUP: This might be our best lineup of musicians yet.
12:00 Dave McKenzie – Scottish Highland Piper – traditional bagpipes in honor & memory of departed friends and family
1:00 Crystal Fountains – authentic bluegrass duo
2:30 Shana Blake Band – so much soul, the best singer in Charlotte!
4:00 Tim Scott Trio – Jazz Trio with the best Drummer you will ever see anywhere!
5:30 – Ancient Cities – Sixties-styled folk, psychedelic arrangements and warm crunchy chords blending classic and modern rock
Maynia Music Chair: Garrett of Midwood (Ladue): 704 408 0001.
Midwood Maynia 2018 T-Shirts: Look for t-shirts featuring the Midwood Maynia 2018 logo. Limited quantities will be available in the park for $20 each. This year’s design was submitted by neighbor Zack Alsentzer, and we’ve upgraded the quality of our shirt material this year, too. You won’t want to miss this one. Or volunteer for the home tour to get a free t-shirt and ticket!
Plaza Midwood koozies & glasses: New merchandise from PMNA! We’ll have pint glasses and beer koozies with the Plaza Midwood logo on them for sale at the event.
We can really use your help as a volunteer for Maynia. We need helpers for the homes on the tour, for the membership table at the park, for Kidswood, and other areas as well. It’s great fun, and all volunteers receive a free 2018 Midwood Maynia T-shirt! Sign-up above!
Thank you to all of our 2018 Sponsors!
