    Beacon Apts

Does anyone know anything about the apartments/condominiums on Beacon St. between Mecklenburg and Marguerite? I think there used to be at least one tenant living in the building because I used to see the same car parked in front overnight. But, I haven’t seen this car in a while. I walked by earlier today and saw several open doors around back. I’m concerned that if this building is not being maintained it could become a haven for criminals, drug users, etc.

    Re: Beacon Apts

I have been walking through the grounds frequently.  I am also concerned about the property.  There are doors open and I have reported the situation to the police.  If you seen anyone going in or out suspiciously please call 911 and report.

    thanks

    Re: Beacon Apts

I’m happy to hear that you are aware of the situation and have been keeping an eye on it.

Is there anyway to contact the owner and hold him/her responsible for the condition of the property BEFORE it becomes a problem?

    Re: Beacon Apts

I don't know if he is still the owner, but Kevin Campbell of Campbell Properties used to own it.  I haven't seen him around in over a year as he used to regularly come by and check on things.

At one time he was converting the apts to condos and put them up for sale. I believe only one sold, and that was the car that has been there.

No one is living there now and the place is falling apart. Doors are ajar.

Maybe if we all called 311 and reported it?

    Re: Beacon Apts

He is still the owner and curious as to why the property hasn't been reassessed for 6 years

Kevin Campbell is still listed as the current owner.

    Re: Beacon Apts

I’d prefer to ask our grid captain or PMNWATCH coordinator to call Mr. Campbell directly and give him the opportunity to correct the situation before we involve the city, but, how do we reach him??

Here is a link to the Charlotte Housing Code Enforcement site:

    http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/Neighborhood+Dev/Maintain+Community+Standards/Housing+Code+Enforcement.htm

We can petition the city to send a Code Enforcement inspector to visit the property within three days and contact the owner with a status report. The property Inspection petition requires five signatures.

    Re: Beacon Apts

Has anyone been able to get hold of the owner Kevin Campbell on this issue?

The condition is still the same only now upstairs in the back one of the water heaters sounds like it's going to blow.  Really loud clanging noise.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do,

    Thanks.

    Re: Beacon Apts

I have been unable to contact Mr. Campbell. If anyone is interested in signing a property inspection petition, please email me at byronunc@gmail.com. Provide your email, fax # or address so I can give you the petition. Again, five signatures are required to have a code enforcement inspector visit the property.

    Re: Beacon Apts

THANK YOU  all for your efforts.  I have been reporting this to code enforcement and our community officers over the last 6 months, but someone was still actually living in the apts then, now it appears they are vacant and MANY doors open.  Byronunc I emailed you this morning about this.  Please add me to the petition and I will also try to contact code enforcement and our officers about this property again.

    Re: Beacon Apts

I talked to our community officers yesterday and they walked the area around the Beacon Apts.  They found one door unsecure and lots of building materials.  They referred the situation to code enforcement.  Code enforcement should be out to check the apts, secure the door if possible and contact the owners.  I am going to email my contact at code enforcement to see if I can find out more info. Will keep you updated.

    Re: Beacon Apts

    From the Code Enforcement Inspector:

Two units were unsecured and the others secured. Inspected the two that were unsecured, and left door hangers and will send out a request to access letter to the owner for the ones that were secured.   Will send out a Secure Structure letter to the owner for the two units that were open.  If they aren’t secured within 10days, a contractor will come out to secure them.   They will initiate a Complaint & Hearing notice for the 2 units I did inspect, and will update me with future actions at this location.

I will update you as I get more information.

If you see anything supscious call 911 to report and then let me know so I can follow up with our officers.

    Re: Beacon Apts

It looks like the owner is cleaning up the apts. We've seen workmen there clearing out the vacant apartments contents.

Thanks to everyone who worked on this issue.  Just shows how well communication works in our area.
