July Yard of the Month: 1909 The Plaza
July 31 @ 8:00 am - August 5 @ 5:00 pm
Congrats to our July Yard of the Month winners: The McLellan-Mariano Family (Vince, Julie, Jonathan, Nicholas & Isabella) at 1909 The Plaza!
More than 20 years ago, when Vince, Julie and the rest of the McLellan-Mariano family moved into their 1923 craftsman cottage, they affectionately dubbed it “Grey Gardens of Plaza Midwood.” Given the condition of the property at the time, they were paying both a literal and symbolic homage. Any of the DIYers in Plaza Midwood know what they mean.
Their family channeled their inner “Little Edie” Beale (sans the skirt as a cape) and began creating their garden’s vision. Five elements were critical: work with nature, design the garden from the inside looking out, experiment, don’t take it too seriously and embrace the rhythm of the garden’s blooming / fading cycles. There were no formal plans that were to drawn to scale, mostly shapes sketched out during conference calls.
Today the front gardens are home to Japanese Maples, a volunteer Magnolia, Azaleas, Camellias, Hydrangeas, Stargazer Lillys, Black Eyed Susans, Yarrow, Cone flowers, Roses i.e., the usual suspects. We’re waiting for the Ginger Lillies and Spider Lillies to bloom. They came from Julie’s mom’s garden and are their salute my her mom and to “Big Edie” Beale.
They share a big hug to whomever nominated their front garden for July’s PM Garden of the Month, and offer many thanks to all the neighborhood gardeners for sharing their visions with the rest of us!
