January 2018 Yard of the Month: 2026 Chambwood Drive
January 23 @ 8:00 am - February 10 @ 5:00 pm
OK, we’re a little late getting our January Yard of the Month posted. Blame it on the New Year’s hangover. Still, big congrats to Wes Sturgis and Jan Keny of 2026 Chambwood Dr. for winning.
When Jan and Wes moved to the house, the yard was totally laden with azaleas, so many azaleas in fact, that when they removed some 60 azalea plants, they discovered more plants which they’d never seen before, because they weren’t able to compete with the ones overshadowing them.
Jan and Wes had different ideas than the previous owners, and they wanted a yard with a variety of plantings that had their own space and bloomed more than just in the spring. They added variety and their approach was to be as earth friendly as they could when using weed control. A few years after moving in, they laid a stone walkway to their house that gave the yard more depth and also separated the yard into a bird feeding area and flowering yard.
Nature reshaped their landscape in 2005 when a microburst knocked down a number of huge oaks on Chambwood, including one of theirs. Since then, they reduced their shade in the front yard because remaining trees posed a threat to the house. Tulips, yarrow and amaryllises now bloom because they have full sun where there once was shade. Boulders were arranged to add more dimension; a red maple was planted to add some fall color. The yard will always be in flux, always morphing into phase after phase, after drought, or heat, or deep freeze, or invasive species.
Congrats again to Jan and Wes!
