Fall Crawl 2018

October 27 @ 11:30 am - 7:00 pm

It’s time again for PMNA’s annual Fall Crawl party in the park!

Get ready for a day of fun, treats (no tricks!) and music in Midwood Park and beyond while also getting your tree banding supplies FREE.

We’ll meet in Midwood Park at 11:30 a.m. for a costume parade led by our great neighborhood Engine 8 fire truck. We’ll then march to The Vine church for the annual Trunk or Treat festivities. Then it’s back to the park for food trucks, Birdsong Brewing Co. beers, live music, bounce houses and other fun for the kids and tons of vendors from Queen City Makersand beyond.

Band schedule:
Noon: Run Engine
1:30: Toleman Randall
3 pm: Tim Scott Trio
5:00: Brit Drozda

We’ll also have tree banding supplies in Midwood Park for FREE starting at 10 a.m. Don’t want to band your own trees? We’ll also have an option to get your trees professionally banded at a heavily reduced price from Silver Duck Tree Banding. Supplies and orders are limited though, so pre-order HERE to confirm yours today. See below for instructions on DIY tree-banding.

Thanks to Harris Teeter, we’ll also have an opportunity for all neighbors to get their flu shots at Fall Crawl. Shots are free for people with most major insurance carriers. Register to get your flu shot HERE.

More info to come! Can’t wait to see everyone in the park!

And a special thanks to our sponsors…

Easy and FREE Tree Banding.

Due to City grant we have limited DIY supplies and professional tree banding services available to fight the cankerworms.

The city arborists strongly recommend continuing with the tree banding.

PMNA is offering FREE tree banding supplies or discounted professional tree banding this year at our annual Fall Crawl festival in Midwood Park. Both are limited quantities, so sign up now to ensure you’re set. The free supplies are available from 10:30 am until 3 pm. If you can’t make it, please call Udo Robitsch at 704 361 7772 to arrange a pick-up time.

For professional banding, please select 1 ticket PER TREE you need banded (NOTE: This is PER TREE not per household). To order tickets follow the link: Professional Tree Banding

For DIY supplies, you need only order 1 set of supplies, which should be enough for multiple trees.

For those signing up for the professional banding, we will contact you with further details.

For those getting the DIY kit, you can pick them up at Fall Crawl between 10:30 and 3.

Any other questions, feel free to reach out at info@plazamidwood.org.

The tree banding supplies and how to band a tree:

Thanks to our PM neighbor and tree banding expert, Steve Barilovits, and his chemical engineer son Steve Jr., we now have an excellent tanglefoot alternative “StikNStop”, which will be available at the Fall Crawl. Additional tree banding supplies needed will come from Little Hardware.

The following changes will simplify tree banding and help us to operate faster and less messy.

  • The batting material is made of fiberglass, is 3” wide, 25’ long. Should you have trees with deep grooves make sure to buy enough batting to create an effective cankerworm barrier under the stretch film.
  • Instead of using tarpaper we will use a plastic stretch film “Grenade”, which comes on a roll with a handle, is 1000’ long and 5” wide. One roll of stretch film may last for years and can be used for all kind of wrapping needs. Wrapping the stretch film a few times around the tree is very easy. Stapling is no longer needed, just stick the last bit of film under the batting material or press against the underlaying film. The smooth surface of the plastic film, contrary to the rough tarpaper, reduces the amount of “StiknStop” needed considerably. After all, the goo is the most expensive treebanding component.
  • The best improvement is dispensing “StikNStop” out of either 10 oz. or 32 oz. tubes. These are the same kind of tubes caulk is sold in. You will very likely own a caulk gun for the 10 oz. tubes, you may have to purchase a caulk gun for the 32 oz. tubes, which would be a one-time investment. The tree banding professionals use these tubes as well, since the application of the sticky stuff is so much easier, faster and less messy than using open containers.  10 oz. of “StiknStop” will last for 12 -15 feet on the plastic stretch film, which translates into 2 – 3 small/medium sized trees. To establish your demand please measure the circumference of your trees and add.
  • The City of Charlotte tree banding experts suggest applying a 3” wide band of goo at 1/16” thickness. Apply the goo preferably with a toothed spreader.

To effectively fight the canker worms the PM Neighborhood Association applied this year and last year for and received a grant from the city. Please pick up all materials needed …. and then stroll to the community garden to admire the newly installed artistic metal fence we could afford with your kind donations for last year’s tree banding supplies.
