December 2018 Yard of the Month: 2115 Mecklenburg Ave.
“My yard is not it’s own,” says Crista Cammaroto, whose artistic landscape “has permeable boundaries out to my friends’ and our wonderful ‘hood. It is a yard in a village where I have raised my son walking everyday to the park and most days to school.”
The foot paths to Cammaroto’s neighbors are lovingly trodden, and their yard is often full of kids. Her garden is not lonely, she said. It is filled with gifts from neighbors — a few plants from Udo, Meredith, Dorne and Wendy, Rebecca, some slate, from Sarah. Her shutters just went up with fresh paint as neighbor Dorne and his son Elias handed up the boards while Crista walked around on the roof.
“I could not have done it without them,” she said.
It’s a neighborhood affair. Cammaroto’s black-eyed suzies can be found across the street, around the corner and down the road. Her reminder to plant pansies came when Rebecca left a fresh flat of them on her side porch. Her reminder to put out holiday decor came when Dorne and Wendy grew an entire Christmas set in their front yard, and the Festivus blow-ups of the Carrols made a fresh appearance with a candy cane rainbow – both yards stopping traffic.
“So I am humbled at the reward for ‘Yard of the Month’ but I still want it to say ‘Yard(s) of the Month’ as the flowers, footpaths, holiday lights and people all blend into our village of Midwood, together a happy sight and a warm accepting place,” Cammaroto said.
