April Yard of the Month: 1925 Tippah Ave.

April 11 @ 8:00 am - May 9 @ 2:00 pm

April Yard of the Month: 1925 Tippah Ave.

The yard at 1925 Tippah has been a labor of love for Marilyn Morenz and Myrna Hodges since 2001. Aside from the pink dogwood there is nothing left of the original design they inherited upon moving in.

The house in 2001, when Marilyn and Myrna moved in.

Back in 2001, there were overgrown hollies, lots of English ivy, and a large river birch which had taken over all the surrounding vegetation. Some serious grading had to be done in 2008 to prevent flooding of the residence. This was a great opportunity to define the beds and install the curved brick walk and dry creek. Over the years, perennials have been planted, some from friends & neighbors (who have become friends) and many from their favorite garden shops (Blackhawk, Rountree, and the Wing Haven plant sale) as time and funds allowed.

As all gardeners know, it’s all trial and error. Marylin and Myrna are constantly making changes to accommodate the plants. With the recent removal of the birch tree, the section of the garden to the left had been a shade garden and overnight became a full sun garden.

They want to thank their friends and neighbors for their advice, support, and encouragement. “We are humbled to have received this award as there are so many lovely gardens,” Marilyn and Myrna said. “The very best thing about the yard is sharing it with everyone, including passersby. We have met so many neighbors just by being out working in the garden. It’s one of the biggest reasons we love Plaza Midwood! Happy gardening!”
