New Businesses in PM

The business district is bustling. Open Door Studios moved
across Central in the buildings beside Family Dollar. Also located over there is Bistro Le Bon which is a new French Café. The pastry chef was previously at Café Monte. I stopped by and picked up a menu Sunday morning and the brunch buffet looked great. In another building is the new Charlotte showroom of Lululemon, the manufacturer of yoga inspired apparel. The staff is super
friendly. The showroom carries the most popular sellers and even though the website has free shipping, I like to try things on. The prices seem high to some people but after you've owned a few pieces you'll understand the durability makes it worth it. Everything is designed to last 5 years and I'm going on 3 on my first yoga pants and they still look and fit great. (My Nike ones are stretched out that I bought at the same time.) Loco Lime up the road on the other side of the RR tracks is open and is a great addition to the neighborhood.

Best,
Pamela Murray

110th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship

The 110th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will be contested at Charlotte Country Club from Aug. 9-15, bringing together the top female amateurs in the game competing for one of golf's most coveted and oldest titles.

More than 900 women will participate in sectional qualifying rounds at courses around the country. Any female amateur with a handicap of 5.4 or lower is eligible.

A field of 156 will make the final cut and come to Charlotte for 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying on Aug. 9 and 10. The low 64 will begin match play on Aug. 11. The 36-hole championship final match will be played Sunday, Aug. 15.
The public is invited to all rounds and there is no admission charge.

Charlotte Country Club, a Donald Ross classic that dates to 1910, will measure approximately 6,560 yards and play to a par of 72.

“This is one of golf's premier events for women and we are excited to have the opportunity to welcome such an outstanding field,” said Championship Director Morgan Lang, “. This is golf at its best.”

Last year's championship was played at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., and was won by Jennifer Song, a rising sophomore from the University of Southern California. Song also won the 2009 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links title for a rare sweep of the two USGA championships.

This year's Women's Amateur marks the fourth time the championship has been played in North Carolina. Previous championships were held at Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte in 1955, at Pinehurst No. 2 in 1989, and at Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville in 1999.

Twenty-four previous USGA championships have been played in the Tar Heel state, including two U.S. Opens at Pinehurst No. 2 and three U.S. Women's Opens at Pine Needles.

"More than 800 volunteers from the Charlotte area will assist the USGA staff in staging the prestigious event,” said Lang. “We anticipate another great championship.”

Previous U.S. Women's Amateur winners include the late Glenna Collett Vare, who won a record six times; JoAnne Gunderson Carner, a five-time winner; and such notables as Juli Inkster, Betty Jameson, Patty Berg, Babe Didrickson Zaharias, Louise Suggs, Barbara McIntire, Beth Daniel and Carl Semple Thompson. The tournament was first played in 1895 in Hempstead, NY.
